Retirement Age

A lot of other countries in the world have already set the retirement age of at least 60 while in Malaysia, we're still bavkward togather with PNG and a few others that maintain the retirement age at 55.

Is it good or bad? It depends. However in general, it helps the country to develop and depends less on foreign labour, however it's for mid range to high as compared to low level workers. But at least mid range and high range workers should be considered to extend their service untill 60, unless they have medical or productivity issues. If they do, they should opt for optional retirement. They souldn't force themselves to work and face the unnecessary consequences. Let be honest and work till you can but not work till you dropped dead...

Gaining Employee Commitment

How to naturally gaining employee's commitment? I interviewed one candidate for promotion today and I admire his definition of employee engagement. He's so involved with not only his staff but also their spouses, kids and even parents. He visited them when they were in hospitals, at wedding receptions and funerals. He had his tea tarik session with his male staff regularly after office in a really 'santai' (relax) mode, not as their boss but as their friend, mentor or big brother.

He really manages his team like a family...that's a true employee engagement to me!

FW: ADUAN PELANGGAN-TUNTUTAN PIHAK TIDAK BERTANGGUNGJAWAB

Tuan,

Mohon tindakan/pandangan tuan berkaitan perkara diatas.

Dari minggu lepas  sehingga ke hari ini CMU Taiping telah menerima banyak aduan dari pelanggan TM, memaklumkan mereka mempunyai tunggakan bil telefon TM yang didaftarkan di Sabah.

Modes Operandi saperti berikut:-

Terima kasih.

Boss Speech during the Appreciation Award Ceremony

Senior management and all employees
Assalamualaikum wbk dan Salam 1Malaysia;

First of all I'd like to congratulate everyone and those who have been selected as best employees for 2011.
I'd like to also congratulate and thank everyone of you who have given your utmost effort, support and contributions towards achieving of targets these far.
Even though our achievement right now is not that encouraging, I still have high hope that all of us will contrinue to strive and give your best in the last miles of our race before year end with at least equal to if not better than our achievements last year.

Ladies & gentlemen;
You are the future of our company. Our playing field is the whole globe, clearly it's huge and a lot larger as compared to that of Malaysia. Of course it's tough right now because our presence in other regions is considerably small. But to survive and justify our existance, we have to expand.
We have to understand better what our customers want, a niche market like Middle East might have different requirements as compared to fully developed nations like US or UK. China is another emerging giant that we should not ignore. We have to learn fast what are their needs and requirements and not just to stick to our limited current offerings.
Ladies & gentlemen;
Each and everyone of you is special, otherwise we should not be here. You should be honoured to be here right now. However, we cannot have all as Best Employees and we also cannot achieve a lot without great teamwork. Individually we have to perform better and be a great team player.
A few names were proposed from each division and the nominees were carefully evaluated and the final list was selected based on your contributions beyond your normal duties. I understand the committee had tough time to come to the decision, it's not an easy task. Everyone is his or her own talent, to us you are special individually.
Do not feel bad if you were not selected this time around. Just continue your good effort and do beyond what is expected of you. Work harder beyond your normal call of duties, be a good teamplayer, understand the business and treat our customers as if they are our good friends or family members. They deserve to be treated that way. After all, they pay our salary.
Finally, I'd like to congratulate the winners and everyone of you individually. Please accept this small token as appreciation from the company.
Before I end my speech, a special thank to the organizing committee and thank you everybody.
Wassalam.

Organizational happiness

Interesting title right? I attnded a course on talent management and the 1st it talks about happiness. Tibet started much2 earlier to survey it's nations Gross National Happiness, what a good thing to do in one country. The buzz word in HC now is Employee Engagement, previously it was Employee Satisfaction, and now should we gauge to Employee Happiness Level? Very interestingly is that happy employee might contribute better to his or her company, but is it so? There's logic there, if they are happy, they'll engage as well as satisfied with the company; if they are engaged, are they happy? If the employees are satisfied, are they happy? So happiness is the highest in rank, therefore, we can say that if employees in an organization are happy, you b et they'll be engaged and satisfied...very interesting!

Leadership Talk. By Tun Mahathir @ Perdana Leadership Foundation, 14|9|2011

You could not imagine how great to was to listen to Tun Mahathir's talk and thought on leadership. Good leaders are the one who knows a little bit than his or her followers (that's why leaders must be broad-minded, always hungry for knowledge & expect more than others), who bring good results to the team (and willing to make unpopular decisions or take calculated risks), who can accept that he or she is not perfect (in needs of good advice from a pool of experts), and better enough if he/she could 'see' the future, not the past.
A leader in a small country could not be too visionaryan ie; wanted to built a bullet train or huge hiways when the people do not require such facilities. They must know their capabilities, their needs, and affordabilities. Malaysians condamned Tun when he wanted to built Penang bridge earlier but now people see that they need another bridge. With the bridge, it has created more business activities, faster communication & efficient transportation of people & goods, etc, hence a lot more cars on the road nowadays that no one could imagine. It's leadership with result orientated, but for a nation it requires a span of time to see the real result. He's blessed with 22 years in the premiership reign so much that he could bring a lot of good results to the entire nations, not with no blood & tears but the whole things that were done were worth it when the country is now one of the wealthiest nations in the world (refering to EPF account as well as the country's reserved).
Nelson Mandela & Peter the Great are the two whom Tun admires, their leadership, perseverence, determination to chart a better future for their countries and people, to develop rather than to punish or revenge, to move foreward rather than to step back, to grab all the possibilities and create path for their nations to better, wealthier, and raised to be a great & respected nation.
The new leadership in China is doing it well, with more than 3 billion populations, they are becoming strong and wealthier each day.
I'm proud to be Malaysian! I wander how different he'd do if he's still the PM when dealing with current economic crisis...what result would he aiming at? Would the result be better than what we are facing right now? (Btw our economy is still not that bad...right?). No one knows, only God...
Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!

Something to share

Owners' Manual Jeff Haden Contact Author Bio Biography Jeff Haden

Jeff Haden learned much of what he knows about management as he worked his way up the printing business from forklift driver to manager of a 250-employee book plant. Everything else he knows, he has picked up from ghostwriting books for some of the smartest CEOs he knows in business. He has written more than 30 non-fiction books, including four Business and Investing titles that reached #1 on Amazon's bestseller list. He'd tell you which ones, but then he'd have to kill you.

My client called me the night before he committed suicide.

Several days prior his business offices had been raided by investigators, and while he shared few details, he was desperately concerned about what would happen to him, his employees, and his company.  The next morning, alone in a home he rarely visited, he shot himself.
I often wonder what he thought about in his last moments. Certainly he regretted some of the business decisions he had made.

Yet I feel certain he regretted personal choices he had made.  We had grown to be friends and he could at times be startlingly — even uncomfortably, at least for me — frank.  He sometimes talked about how he wanted a family and children he could spoil and cherish.  He talked about finding friends who liked him for himself and not for his connections or influence or money.
He talked about his wife who, years ago, had committed suicide and whether he without knowing bore some responsibility.

That's why I think he thought mostly about choices; choices he desperately wished he had made differently.
If you knew you only had minutes left to live, what would you think about?  You wouldn't think about work or business.  It's a cliche, but true nonetheless:  No one on their deathbed regrets not spending enough time at work.  Would you really think about money you never earned, or projects you never completed, or companies you never started?  Would those be your regrets?
Would those be the types of choices you would want back?

Of course not.  You would think about the people you love and how you would have spent more time with them.  You would have told them, over and over, just how much they meant to you.  I think those are the decisions he thought about in his last minutes.  At heart, regardless of mistakes he made, I think he was a good man.  Flawed, like all of us, but still a good person.

I tried the best I could to express his love for family and friends in his eulogy.  Still, I sometimes wish I could find a better, more lasting way to honor his memory.

There is a way.  But I need your help.

Today, go home early.  Not tomorrow and not some other day.  Today.  At the latest, leave right on time.  Projects and contracts and promotions and money and glory will be there waiting for you tomorrow.  Go home, find somewhere quiet, and sit with your spouse or significant other and tell them how much they mean to you.  Set aside any baggage or resentment, take off any emotional armor you wear, think about why you fell in love in the first place, and speak from your heart.

Then hang out with your kids.  Talk to them.  Praise them.  All your kids want is your attention.  Attention is the easiest and the best gift you can offer.

Or call a friend you've lost touch with.  Swallow your pride if necessary and reach out.  Take the first step.
Above all, live today differently.  Someday we will all probably wish we had made a few different choices along the way, but at least we won't wish to change anything about today.
I think my client — and more importantly, my friend — would like that.

Law of the Garbage Truck

This has to be one of the best emails I have received in a long time because when you sit and think about the meaning, it is so true.

Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport.

We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.

As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally.

Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,

so ... Love the people who treat you right.

Pray for the ones who don't.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a garbage-free day!

Very motivating...think/do out of box!

If your company, a comb manufacturer, assigns you to sell combs to the monks in the temples ? Can you do it ?What is your answer ?a) No Way , Impossible !b) Crazy !c) I will give it a try in order to follow my boss'instruction.d) Well, I will try.e) Ya, I think I can sell ??? (5pcs ? 10pcs ? 50pcs ? or more...you name it)Pick an answer above and read below to find out if you are or are not going to be a successful person or not at all.The Story: SELLING COMB TO THE MONKThere is one company "manufacturing combs" which intends to expand its business and therefore, the management needsto employ a new Sales Manager. The company ADV ERTISED the vacancy in the newspaper. Many people turned up for the interview daily....adding up to almost a hundred intervieweesin just few days. The Company now faces the problem in choosingthe right candidate for this position. Sothe Company's HR managersets out a task to those who wantedto come for the final interview. The task: Selling CombsTo Monks In TemplesOnly 3 applicants are willing to stay on for this Final Interview challenge:- A, B and CThe HR manager instructed: "Now I want three of you to sell these wooden combs to the monks in the temples. You only have 10 days to do it and report to me."After 10 days, they reported. The HR manager asked A: "How many have you sold ?"A answered: "Only One."HR manager asked: "How did you manage to sell one ?A answered: "The monks in the temple scolded me when I showed them the comb but on my way downhill, I met a young monk who bought it to scratch his head due to dandruff."The HR manager then asked B: "How many did you sell ?B replied: "10 pieces. I went to a shrine and noticed that many devotees' hair were in a mess due to strong winds outside the shrine. The monk listened to my advice and bought 10 combs for their devotees as a mark of respect to Buddha."Then, the HR manager asked C: "What about you ?"C replied: "1,000 units."The HR manager and the other 2 interviewees were astounded.HR manager asked: "How did you do that ?"C replied: "I went to a famous temple. After observing for a few days, I discovered that there were many tourists. I then told the Chief Abbot there. "Sifu, those who come here are very devoted. If you could give them a gift, it will be more elating to them. I told him that I have a bulk of combs here and asked him to put his signature on the combs as a present to these visitors. He was very delighted and immediately ordered 1,000 pieces."MORAL OF THE STORY:HARVARD UNIVERSITY did a research:-1) 85% of success is due to attitude and 15% is capability2) Attitude is more important than intelligence, specials skills or luck..In other words, professional knowledge only constitutes for 15% success factor while 85% is due to self-cultivation, public relations and adaptability.Still remember the story of Selling Shoes to Africans ?When 2 Salesmen were sent to Africa , one of them reported: "Cannot do it. No one wears shoes over there !"The second salesman said: "It is good to market. A lot of opportunities."Success and Failure is dependent on how we face problems.Remember, when the economic is good, there are people going bankrupt. When business is bad, there are many new millionaires as well. So apply the 85% of the right working attitude fully.Something 2 Share:I believe this basic principle of 85% right working attitude is also applicable to Plantation Management. Many problems encountered by planters can be overcome because they are not as difficult as "selling comb to the monks". Logically, it's impossible for the monk to buy a comb to comb hair. Monks in temples are simply not your customers! With this story, we learn to "think out of the box" and even with 15% capability, we are confident to solve problems as long as we have the RIGHT WORKING ATTITUDE, COMMITMENT, DISCIPLINED, DEDICATED and DETERMINED.Every time when we watch MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, the ending is always POSSIBLE.DO NOT FIND EXCUSES NOT TO DO THE POSSIBLE BUT INSTEAD,FIND WAYS AND MEANS TO DO THE! POSSIBLE! .  That's the right working attitude

Importance of extra curricular activities

Extra curricular activities at school can develop you to become a better person, and not to only focus on academic alone. In real life, academic achievement is a must but extra ability such as leadership etc is definitely a plus point. You will be ne given a book or an exampaper at work but you are expected to manage and deal with a lot of thgs in the office without any handbook and resolve the tasks given in a specific time frame. The skill at school will teach you not to only pass the exam but also to survive in the real world. There're a lot more you can learn out of classroom, and grab all those knowledge so tht you can be the best employee tht can survive in any situations at work.

The Importance of English Language in the Business Environment

English language is very important in the corporate world. If you want to be successful, you must be fluent in English and good at writing. Otherwise you can forget it altogahter. But to be good or fluent if English is not your first language? Try to work at a shop or hotel tht is dealing with international people and be around people who usually communicate in English. You need to talk and practice to be good. For the start, try your best, even use a sign language, but you will be surprise, one fine day you may be able to talk like English is your motjer tongue. Not tht you must be proud to be able to communicate better in English, but you may get better advantage in a business world if you can speak and write good English, if you can entre the corporate world at all.

Introvert vs extrovert

Everybody wants to be successful. But before that we have to look at ourselves. What are our strengths, our weaknesses? Are we introvert or extrovert? Can we develop ourselves? Are those characteristics or t raits can be learned? Knowing yourselves would help you to choose the right career for yourselves. For instance if you are an introvert person, and your are good at numbers, a very detail person but you don't like to de al so much with people, you might want to consider being an accountant or and IT specialist or a programmer. If you are an extrovert person, you might want to consider out of office work such as engineer, salesperson or a marketing job. So is introvert person or extrovert person better? The answer is both are good in its own way. The only thg is tht you need to understand your strengths and weaknesses and match tht with the right job tht suits you. So it's very important for you to understand about yourselves and sharpen the strengths and try to improve you weaknesses in order to get your dream job.

I find this article to be very humbling .......... a good read for everyone, parents and children

Story of Appreciation One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.
He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision.
The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.
The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" the youth answered "none".
The director asked, " Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.
The director asked, " Where did your mother work?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
The director asked, " Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.
The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.*
The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.
The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.
This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother's hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.
After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.
That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.
Next morning, the youth went to the director's office.
The Director noticed the tears in the youth's eyes, asked: " Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?"
The youth answered, " I cleaned my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes'
The Director asked, " please tell me your feelings."
The youth said, Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today. Number 2, by working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.
The director said, " This is what I am looking for to be my manager.
I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.
Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company's performance improved tremendously.
A child, who has been protected and
habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop "entitlement mentality" and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work,
he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager,
he would never know the sufferings of his employees
and would always blame others. For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually
would not feel sense of achievement. He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?*
You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person.
The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.
